Medieval Khaz Art (Musical Notation)

Updated: Dec 6

On November 22, 2024, the 63rd meeting of the "Carahunge Armenological Center," which we organize in collaboration with the National University of Architecture and Construction of Armenia, took place.

Topic: Medieval Khaz Art (Musical Notation).

Lecturer: Artur Shakhnazaryan, composer, Komitas scholar, and the person who deciphered the Khaz Art. He is the author of the book "E Arar" and several other scholarly works on Armenian medieval khazology, cultural studies, ethnography, folk art, and education.

At the beginning of the event, we were greeted with a pleasant surprise. Our colleague and friend, mathematician Viktor Vahanyan, who resides in Sochi, had asked his longtime friend, artist and poet Hovhannes Aghababyan (both were born in Akhaltsikha), to create a painting for linguist Leyla Stepanyan. This was a gesture of respect and gratitude for her contributions to linguistics and Armenology. Hovhannes combined two things dear to Leyla Stepanyan: the Gtchavank monastery and one of the Moai statues of Easter Island. It is worth noting that Ms. Leyla is researching the similarities between the Armenian language and the languages of Easter Island.

Hovhannes traveled from Artashat to personally deliver the gift, which was presented in a warm atmosphere. Ms. Leyla was deeply moved by the gesture, and she greatly appreciated the gift.
